Grounding techniques are valuable coping skills that provide support when we are trying to manage our stress and bring ourselves back to the present moment. Grounding helps individuals redirect their attention and focus on the present moment, allowing them to regain a sense of control and stability.
One effective grounding technique is the 5 sense rules. The reason I like the 5 senses technique is because it is easy to understand, easy to use, and can be done anywhere.
I did not create this technique. It is a common coping skill that has been used for many years.
The concept is that you use your 5 senses (see, touch, hear, smell, and taste) to help call attention to what is around you to stop yourself from ruminating or focusing on things that are causing distress.
