Individual therapy can be a highly beneficial and transformative process if used the correct way. It offers individuals the opportunity to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe and confidential environment. It provides a supportive and non-judgmental space for individuals to work through personal challenges, gain insight into their experiences, and develop effective coping strategies.
Not every session looks the same. Some people prefer in-person therapy where you can go to an office and talk directly to the therapist. Others prefer Telehealth therapy meaning you are communicating through the computer screen. At the different places I have worked, I have found that sessions typically last anywhere from 45-60 minutes. The specific methods and interventions used also change depending on the circumstance.
No matter what the situation is though, the client should be collaborating with the trained mental health clinician to identify the needs and create goals. This could range from managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, relationship issues, improving communication skills, establishing healthy boundaries, navigating major life transitions, and so on. The advantage of individual therapy is that it is personalized to you and whatever you want to talk about.
Although it may seem scary at times to open up and talk to someone about your concerns, it is very important to be honest in session. The progress and success of the client relies heavily on their ability to open up and talk. The therapist cannot know to address something unless the client tells the therapist.
If you are unsure if therapy is right for you, you can call a therapist to request a consultation. This is when you can ask questions and get a feel for their approach.
